The best FE prep depends on which person you are. Fresh grad close to the material: an old NCEES practice exam as a diagnostic, handbook drills, timed practice- mostly free. Years out and foggy: a structured content course. Repeat taker stalling in the same band: change your test-day strategy, not your content volume. Half of you don't need to buy ANYTHING.

Every "best FE prep" list you'll find was written by someone selling one of the entries. This one's different- I sell coaching, and I'm going to tell you most people reading this don't need it. I tell people that to their face in DMs, on calls, over text weekly.
It's 2026. Anyone can record 100+ hours of FE lectures, have AI spit out 3,000 practice problems, throw it in a portal, and call it a course. YouTube, Reddit, and AI already solved the "explain it to me / give me questions" problem.
So here's the actual landscape:
FREE- explanations, random problems, generic study plans. YouTube covers every topic. The FE Reference Handbook is a free download from your NCEES account. Reddit will answer anything. If you're a fresh grad close to the material, free plus ONE official NCEES practice exam (use the old PDF as a diagnostic, save the interactive one for right before test day) is genuinely enough. I passed my FE (ECE) first try without studying- this is plenty if you are close to the material.
CHEAP- structured problem banks and recorded courses. The $100-300 tier. Legit purchase if you need structure and problem volume with answers, especially if you're a few years out and your fundamentals are foggy but not gone. Pick ONE and finish it. The people who fail with these usually didn't need a second bank- they needed to stop switching between them.
EXPENSIVE- big-name review courses, $1,000-1,800. 150+ hours of video, live classes, homework. Real content, and for someone a decade out who needs their whole foundation rebuilt on a schedule, it can be the right call. But read the guarantee before you pay: most say if you grind ALL their content exactly as prescribed and still fail, you get to... grind it again once for free. That's not a guarantee. That's "we stand behind our hundreds of hours of content enough to let you suffer through it twice." The model- if it doesn't work, the program's never wrong, you just didn't do it right, here's round two.
Use whoever you want. Just be honest about what you're buying, and ask the only question that matters: are your incentives aligned? When this doesn't work the first time, who actually loses something- you, or them?
And here's the bucket nobody's list mentions- because no course can fix it:
If you've already watched a ton of videos, bought a question bank or two, done hundreds of problems, and you're STILL failing or terrified- your issue isn't "not enough content." I've seen this movie dozens of times. Person knows the concepts, fails, decides they need MORE concepts. Studies hundreds of hours. Stops dating, stops seeing friends. Fails again- because it was never their knowledge. It was their strategy. No content library sells the fix, which is why the lists never include it.
