FE Time Management: The Gold Bar Rule™ (Easiest Questions First)

FE Time Management: The Gold Bar Rule™ (Easiest Questions First)

FE time management comes down to the Gold Bar Rule™: three passes per section. Pass one, grab everything you can do in 45 seconds. Pass two, questions you know that take time. Pass three, the monsters, after every easy point is banked. Give the first section 2.5 hours and let the rule determine the order in which you answer questions.

None of this is theory. I passed my FE (ECE) first try without studying, and I've since helped first timers and repeat takers pass across multiple disciplines: Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Environmental, and Other Disciplines. I've ended up specializing in helping repeat takers pass, including those who have failed up to seven times before.

If you've been finishing with 20+ questions rushed or blind guessed, this page is the fix. Not more problems. Not another course. A rule. One of my students used it on his 4th attempt and gained 50 extra minutes… on both sections.

About that 4th attempt student: three previous fails, and it was never about knowledge- same degree, same brain on attempt four. What changed: he skipped when stuck instead of forcing it, wrote his work out instead of panic math, and let the rule run his clock. The rule gave him back time he'd been donating to questions that were never gonna pay. We changed how he took the exam instead of how much he studied, and he passed. Same degree. Same brain. Different approach.

Prep courses treat time trouble as a speed problem- "do more problems, get faster." But you don't run out of time because you're slow. You run out because a few superglued questions at the front eat 5-10 minutes each while easy points sit unbanked at the back of the section. Decision problems get fixed with rules, not reps.

Here's the rule:

Imagine you're in a room with 110 gold bars and 5 hours 20 minutes on the clock to pick up as many as you can. Some bars are loose. Some are stuck to the floor with bubblegum. Some are superglued down.

Engineers being engineers (we, let's be real), we take a chisel to a superglued bar even when it's the third question- because "I should know this." Then we panic about the wasted time, confidence drops, we second guess everything after it, and the anxiety makes us dumber. (Experience AND science.)

So here's what you do instead:

1- Give yourself 2.5 hours for the first section.

2- You're going through the ENTIRE section three times.

3- Pass 1: loose bars only. Questions you can do in 45 seconds or less, cold. Grab them all. Flag everything else.

4- Pass 2: bubblegum. Questions you KNOW how to do but that take time- easy stuff with real calculation in it.

5- Pass 3: superglue. The monsters. By now you've banked every easy point, so a monster that vacuums your time isn't stealing from any easy questions.

Rinse and repeat for the second section.

Why it works: every question is worth the same points. Three monsters at 5 minutes each cost 900 seconds for the same points as three loose bars. Spend those 900 seconds writing out your units on 90 questions you actually know, and you'll stop donating points to silly mistakes forever. Remember: you need about 60-65% and nobody cares where it comes from.

The rule isn't magic. If you don't know the material, it can't save you. But if you know your stuff and your main problem is getting stuck and running out of time- this is the highest ROI lever there is.

If you're a working engineer on attempt 2-8, know the material, and done brute-forcing this solo, here's what my 1:1 Pass Guarantee actually is:

Who this is for / who it's not for

This is for you if:

This is NOT for you if:

If you're absolutely set on DIY'ing your next attempt, here's the highest-leverage way to do it-

1- Run your very next practice session in three passes. It'll feel wrong the first time. Do it anyway.

2- Set a hard 45 second cap on pass one. Use a timer until the instinct is installed.

3- One FULL length practice exam under the Gold Bar Rule™ and time caps before your real date- the rule only becomes automatic at full length.

4- Skip the new course. Time leaks aren't in the content.

5- Perhaps the most important, treat your FE result as data about the plan, not a verdict on you.
