Which FE Exam Should I Take? Honest Answer From An Expert

Which FE exam should you take? Any one you want- there are NO rules pairing your FE to your PE or your degree. So pick by goal: fastest path, take the discipline closest to what you already remember. Deep-understanding type, take the one matching your target PE. Both work. Anyone telling you otherwise is usually selling that discipline's course.

None of this is theory. I passed my FE (ECE) first try without studying, and I've since helped first timers and repeat takers pass across multiple disciplines: Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Environmental, and Other Disciplines. I've ended up specializing in helping repeat takers pass, including those who have failed up to seven times before.

You can take ANY FE and pair it with ANY PE. There are no rules. None.

Which you should take depends on who YOU are and what your goal is.

Say your ultimate goal is the Power PE. Mathematically- most of what's on the ECE FE isn't on the Power PE anyway. Studying 10+ irrelevant topics to pass the ECE FE won't exactly prepare you for the Power PE. So "take the FE that matches your PE" is already shakier than it sounds.

So the real question is what TYPE of test taker you are:

1- If you're the type who wants to do hundreds of problems, insists on full derivations and deep understanding even when it takes longer- take the discipline exam that matches your track. Some people are genuinely like this. More power to them.

2- If you're the type who values SPEED- who wants the FE out of the way so you can get on with your career and your PE- take the exam closest to what you already remember. For a lot of people that's their degree discipline. For plenty of others it's Other Disciplines, because they already have that knowledge base. Some people are genuinely like this. More power to them.

Neither option is right or wrong. It's just whatever floats your boat.

And one more thing, because I've seen this movie dozens of times- person knows the concepts, fails, decides they need MORE concepts. Studies dozens, hundreds of hours. Stops dating, stops seeing friends. Fails again- because it was never their knowledge. It was their strategy. Whichever discipline you pick, HOW you take the test decides more than which test you take.

Who this is for / who it's not for

This is for you if:

This is NOT for you if:

If you're absolutely set on DIY'ing your next attempt, here's the highest-leverage way to do it-

1- Decide your type honestly. Depth person or speed person. No wrong answer, but pick ONE and stop straddling.

2- Speed person: list the disciplines you could sit and grab the old NCEES practice exam (the PDF version) for your top candidate. Take it as a diagnostic. Closest-to-passing wins the decision.

3- Depth person: take the FE matching your PE track and accept the longer runway on purpose- that's your boat, float it.

4- Either way: check the actual NCEES exam specs for your candidate exams (they publish the topic list and question counts) instead of taking some course seller's word for what's on it.

5- Book the exam BEFORE you feel ready. The material is freshest today- it only rusts while you deliberate.

6- Perhaps the most important, treat your FE result as data about the plan, not a verdict on you.
